Important Reminder: City of Hamilton Pool & Hot Tub Draining Regulations
As pool and hot tub season continues, businesses and homeowners in Hamilton are reminded that the City of Hamilton has strict regulations for draining pool and hot tub water to help protect local waterways and the environment. Improper disposal can result in fines under the City’s Sewer Use By-law.
Key Requirements
Chlorinated Water
- Water must be dechlorinated before draining.
- The City recommends not adding chemicals for two weeks, allowing chlorine levels to naturally decline (or reach 0.1 mg/L or lower).
- Once dechlorinated, water should be slowly discharged onto your own property where it can fully absorb into the ground.
Saltwater Pools
- Do not discharge saltwater onto streets, into storm sewers, or into ravines.
- Saltwater should be discharged into your home’s sanitary sewer system, such as a basement floor drain, laundry tub, sink, or bathtub connection, or be removed by a licensed water hauler.
Storm Sewers
- Street gutters and catch basins drain directly into local creeks and lakes.
- Discharging chlorinated water, saltwater, or other pool chemicals into storm sewers is prohibited and can harm aquatic ecosystems.
